Frequently Asked Questions
What is a net worth certificate and what does it contain?
A net worth certificate is a CA-certified statement of financial position — total assets minus total liabilities at a specific date. It is not a statutory form but a professional certificate issued under the Chartered Accountants Act 1949. Standard contents: (a) opening paragraph identifying the purpose (visa, loan guarantee, court filing, or tender); (b) computation table — assets (bank balances, fixed deposits, investments at current market value, immovable property, vehicles, business capital) minus liabilities (outstanding loans, overdrafts, unpaid taxes); (c) the net worth figure; (d) the valuation basis (cost, market value, or book value as appropriate for the purpose); (e) the CA's signature, UDIN, membership number, and firm registration number. Every certificate must carry a valid UDIN generated on the ICAI UDIN portal — a certificate without UDIN is rejected by banks, embassies, and courts.
What documents are needed to prepare a net worth certificate?
For individuals: last 3 months bank statements for all accounts including NRE and NRO accounts; fixed deposit certificates as of the certificate date; demat account statement showing shares and mutual fund units at current market value; property documents (registered sale deed and a recent market valuation if required by the institution); vehicle RC books; LIC and insurance surrender values; and outstanding loan statements from banks showing current balances. For business owners: last audited balance sheet; current bank statements; debtors and creditors list as of the certificate date; and current stock valuation. The CA reconciles the assets declared with income reported in ITR filings — significant inconsistencies are flagged before the certificate is issued.
Do different purposes require different certificate formats?
Yes. Visa applications — Schengen, UK, US, Canada, Australia — each have format preferences: Schengen and UK typically require all assets converted to EUR or GBP at the current RBI reference rate; the US visa requires current market values rather than historical cost. Court filings follow the format prescribed by the specific court or the opposing party's application — Family Court proceedings often additionally require disclosure of PF balances and pending litigation. Bank credit facilities use the lender's own format with specific disclosures on contingent liabilities and secured versus unsecured obligations. SEBI licensing and stock exchange tender submissions require Schedule III-equivalent format with detailed notes. Always provide the specific purpose when engaging us so the correct format is issued from the start.
What is UDIN and why is it mandatory?
UDIN (Unique Document Identification Number) is an 18-digit reference generated on the ICAI UDIN portal (udin.icai.org) for every certificate, audit report, or document certified by a Chartered Accountant. It is mandatory for all CA certificates and reports under ICAI guidelines effective February 1, 2019. UDIN links the certificate to the specific CA, the document details, and the issue date — it cannot be reused, transferred, or backdated. Verifiers — banks, embassies, courts, and registrars — can verify the certificate authenticity in real time at udin.icai.org. A certificate without UDIN is treated as invalid: banks will not honour guarantees supported by such certificates, and most Schengen visa centres and UK visa applications will reject supporting financial documents that lack UDIN.
How quickly can a net worth certificate be issued?
A standard individual net worth certificate for a visa or bank guarantee is typically issued within 1-2 business days once all documents are provided and verified. Certificates covering multiple business interests, investments in unlisted entities, or immovable property requiring fresh valuation take 3-5 business days. For court filings, allow 3 business days to review the court order or proceeding requirements before confirming the format and computation basis. The certificate is issued as of the date of signing and cannot be backdated — most institutions require the certificate to be dated within 3 months of the application or submission date, so plan accordingly.
